Summer Stock is Venice Theatre’s six-week theatrical boot camp for senior high and college students interested in a career in musical theatre. These are highly driven and talented performers who - lucky for us! - put on a fully mounted production at the end of their training. This year it’s the Sondheim/Bernstein classic, West Side Story.

A 20th century Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the story of two teens torn between ethnic loyalty and their intense love for one another. The score includes “Tonight”, “Somewhere”, “Maria”, and “Something’s Coming”. Directed and Choreographed by Brad Wages, Musical Direction by Michelle Kasanofsky, Costume and Set Design by Nicholas Hartman.

Two Summer Art Exhibitions at the Englewood Art Center

Two Art Exhibitions to Open at Englewood Art Center for the Summer

Englewood Art Center, a division of Ringling College of Art and Design announces their next two exhibitions in the Loranger Gallery for the summer.  “Sizzle” which will run from June 27 through July 31 and “Everything Goes” from August 1 through September 5.

All artists are called to submit work for these exhibitions and may win cash awards for “Sizzle” up to $300.

Sizzle’,  which takes its name from the hot waves that are seen on pavement in the heat of the summer, will include a variety of styles related to abstract work and artists are encouraged to participate by submitting works done in the last three years.  Pure abstract art relies on color and form and can evoke a strong emotional response in the viewer. There is a wide range of possible between the forms of abstract painting and realism that will not limit the artists’ entries.

“I expect a lot of phone calls about the show,”  Says Englewood Art Center Administrative Manager, Sloan Dunnagan, “I would say that if an artist is wondering if their piece will fit into Sizzle then there is something about the piece that probably does qualify for entry.”  Dunnagan explained that there should be great discussion at the art center about the qualities of these styles and looks forward to the questions this art form will evoke.  “Part of our mission is to encourage conversations about what is seen in our galleries” Dunnagan stated.

Also on display is work by watercolorist, Fran Fink.  Fran began painting in Flint, Michigan and took classes at the Flint Institute of Art.  She formed the Paint and Palette Art Group, also in Michigan and developed her love for watercolor in 1997.  She has won ribbons locally during the Rotary Art Show on Dearborn Street and at Englewood Art Center’s Fine Art show in 2008.  Her pieces are on display in the Mitchell Gallery, which is located in a separate building at the back of the art center through July 31.

The public is invited to a reception for both exhibitions scheduled for Sunday, July 5 from 2 - 4 pm. Food and beverages are provided at no charge and winners of the exhibition will be announced.

Also this summer, Englewood Art Center will hold receiving for artwork for the exhibition “Everything Goes” on Saturday, August 1 from 9 am - 12noon and encourages all artists in the area to participate.  The title is a play on words and refers to the theme of allowing a wide-open range of entries such as copies of work, Giclee, or older works done by area artists.  It’s title is reminiscent of ”Anything Goes,” a popular Cole Porter musical, and that fits the theme of this exhibition, too, since almost anything related to original art can be entered.

“This exhibition will allow older pieces to be entered,” Mary Ann Burke, gallery chair says, “even copies of other people’s works can be entered as long as credit is given. We have quite a few artists doing great work, but they may not have qualify for entry into the other exhibitions because they were based on another painting.  This exhibition showcases anything the artist would like to exhibit.“  Artists are encouraged to price the pieces to sell in order to carry through on the second part of the theme.

A Yarty (combination of “yard” and “art”) Sale of studio pieces and donated items to the art center will be offered for sale in addition to the exhibition pieces.  Tables of Silent Auction items will be on display throughout the exhibition and artists are asked to donate supplies to the center that they aren’t using.  Items can include paints, brushes, boards, paper, matte board, frames, easels and the like.  A party is being planned for the end of the summer to distribute the silent auction items.
“This is like ‘One man’s trash may be another man’s treasure, explained Burke, “And the hope is that if an artist isn’t using something in their studio, then they’d pass it on to someone who could use it or needs it.  Everyone wins because the art center will raise money for future exhibitions, the artist will clear out their studios and another artist will get equipment and supplies at a great savings.”

Receiving for “Everything Goes” is August 1 from 9 am until 12 noonContact Englewood Art Center, a division of Ringling College of Art and Design at 941-474-5548 for more information. The Art Center is located at 350 South McCall Road in Englewood, 4 blocks south of historic Dearborn Street.
